The Department of Spanish and Portuguese has three scholarships it presents on an annual or semi-annual basis. The following is a brief description of the competitions for these scholarships.
This scholarship competition is held once every four years. The winner of the competition will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student at the University of New Mexico who is completing a major (or second major) in Spanish or Portuguese and who is pursuing a degree in teaching or some branch of diplomatic work in the United States of America or elsewhere and who, in the opinion of the selection committee, shows the greatest potential for making a significant contribution to international relations and/or teaching.
Open to any student (undergraduate or graduate) who is pursuing a first or second major in Portuguese or Spanish.
Eligibility: Any graduate student who is pursuing a degree in Spanish or Portuguese - or - any undergraduate student who has *declared a first or second major in Spanish or Portuguese, and has a minimum GPA of 3.0 in courses taken in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese.

This competition is held once a year in the spring.Patrick Conroy is an M.A. graduate of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UNM who has endowed a grant to aid meritorious students who are majors, second majors or minors in Spanish and Portuguese and who would like to study abroad for spring break or during the summer, but find it difficult to afford the cost of a program.
Open to any UNM student who is pursuing a major, second major or minor in Portuguese or Spanish.
Eligibility: Any degree-seeking UNM student in good academic standing at UNM who is planning to participate in an approved UNM study abroad program such as: international exchange; a short-term or faculty-led international course; an intensive language study or an independent study; an international internship or service-learning program, etc. The applicant must be able to receive UNM credits or transfer credits for the international program; demonstrate financial need; and has declared a major, second major or minor in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
This scholarship competition is held once a year, in the spring, whenever funds are available.The winner of the competition will be awarded to a student at the University of New Mexico who is completing a major or second major in Spanish and will be a junior in the coming fall semester. The student will be selected by faculty in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese on the basis of academic excellence, financial need and the financial need and the strength of the submitted writing samples (in Spanish).
Open to any undergraduate student who is pursuing a first or second major in Spanish who will be a first- or second-semester junior in fall.
Eligibility: Any student who is actively pursuing a first or second major in Spanish, who will be a first- or second-semester junior in fall (have earned 64–85 credit hours), and who has a minimum GPA of 3.0 in Spanish courses taken in the Department.
