Portuguese Students Traveling to Brazil

April 21, 2017

Five Portuguese students will be spending their summer in Rio de Janeiro through the LAII summer FLAS Fellowship. The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship is available to students through the Department of Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) at UNM. This fellowship helps cover expenses associated with less commonly taught language programs. Recipients of academic year FLAS Fellowships are required to take courses at UNM in K’iche’ Maya, Brazilian Portuguese, or Quechua, as well as Latin American area studies courses. All five students traveling to Brazil have been pupils of Teaching Assistant and MA Portuguese candidate for the S&P Department, Kelly Cardoso da Silva. Jennifer Arnason, who is an MA candidate and Teaching Assistant for the S&P Department as well,  is one of the five students selected to travel to Brazil. Jennifer shares with us that she will be in Rio de Janeiro for 6 weeks this summer immersing herself with the Portuguese language and staying with a  host family where her days will consist of language instruction and cultural exploration.
