Professors Damian Wilson and Naomi Shin Celebrating bilingualism and New Mexican Spanish
September 5, 2018
On Thursday, November 8, UNM Professors Damián Vergara Wilson and Naomi Shin will host a reception to celebrate bilingualism and New Mexican Spanish. The reception will bring together UNM alumni, community members, students, and scholars of bilingualism, and will showcase UNM's Spanish as a Heritage Language program and student projects on bilingualism and Spanish.
The reception will include the book launch for Bilingualism in the Community (Cambridge University Press, 2018), written by UNM alumna and former professor, Rena Torres Cacoullos, & former UNM professor, Catherine Travis. Bilingualism in the Community debunks the notion that Spanglish means mixing up languages, by revealing the variation patterns in hundreds of thousands of New Mexican bilinguals’ own words--in both languages. Bilinguals are adept at maintaining distinct structures in their two languages, while switching between them. Spanish and English in NM are juntos pero no revueltos, connected but not confused.
Where: National Hispanic Center, Salon Ortega
When: November 8, 5-7 pm
