PhD Candidate in Hispanic Linguistics
Department of Spanish and Portuguese
Biography
Maame Adofoah Yamoah holds a combined bachelor's degree in Linguistics and Spanish from the University of Ghana. In 2020, she graduated from the University of New Mexico with an M.A. in Spanish and a concentration in Hispanic Linguistics. The throes of the COVID pandemic brought a somewhat unplanned break in her educational journey, which ended up being a blessing in disguise as it gave her the chance to have a stint at working in Corporate America (COMCAST NBCU), spend more time with her family and later, complete PhD graduate coursework in the College of Education at UNM prior to transferring to PhD in SPANPORT at UNM in Fall 2025.
Maame has always aspired to be a language professor and is currently back on track and pursuing a Ph.D. in Spanish. Her brief interaction with the education program made her see the need in illuminating the stories of Newcomer/Immigrant communities.
Her research highlights newcomer Spanish and non- Spanish speaking communities with the goal of bringing their stories to the forefront and positively impacting education, first, in New Mexico and, the world beyond. It is her dream to CONTRIBUTE to INCREASING THE NUMBER OF people in Ghana becoming Second language learners of Spanish. She believes language is very important and wholly agrees with Nelson Mandela in his assertion that "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart". She aspires to further research and/or discover the most effective way to teach language to learners.
