Undergraduate Support
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese has three scholarships it presents on an annual or semi-annual basis. The following is a brief description of the competitions for these scholarships.
Conroy International Study GrantConroy International Study Grant
Patrick Conroy has endowed two $1,000 grants to be awarded to two meritorious students who are either a major, second major or minor in Spanish or Portuguese (within the College of Arts and Sciences), who would like to study abroad, but finds it difficult to afford the cost of a program.
Eligibility:
- Planning to participate, in an approved UNM Spanish or Portuguese study abroad program between May 2024 and May 2025;
- A degree-seeking UNM student;
- In good academic standing at UNM;
- Able to receive UNM credits or transfer credits for the international program;
- Able to demonstrate financial need;
- A *declared major, second major or minor in Spanish and/or Portuguese.

Lina A. Ruiz y Ruiz Memorial Award
Lina A. Ruiz y Ruiz Memorial Award
The Lina A. Ruiz y Ruiz Memorial Award is a $1000 scholarship for one UNM student pursuing a Spanish degree. The awardee will be selected by department faculty on the basis of: Academic excellence, and the strength of the submitted application letter (which must be written in Spanish).
Eligibility:
- A *declared first or second major in Spanish within the college of Arts and Sciences and are actively pursing the degree.
- Expected to graduate between the Spring 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters.
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in Spanish courses taken in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UNM.

College of Arts & Sciences Summer Scholarship
A & S Summer Scholarship
Awards will be used toward tuition and class supplies. Students must be working toward an A&S major and demonstrate good academic standing. Please download and fill-out the application form and submit along with the required paperwork. Latinx Linguistics Fund
Latinx Linguists Fund
The Latinx Linguists’ Fund serves students of Linguistics who are first generation to college, low income, and/or members of ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in graduate school. Any recipient must be focusing their studies on Linguistics or Hispanic Linguistics.; This award ranges from $200-$800 per year.
Eligibility:
- A current graduate student in Hispanic Linguistics or Linguistics in good academic standing
- A current undergraduate student in good academic standing who has
declared a major in Linguistics -or - declared a major in Spanish & Portuguese and
taken or be enrolled at least two upper-division Hispanic Linguistics or Linguistics courses, such as:
SPAN: 350, 351, 352, 445 or 449 (Note: other courses may count if they have sufficient Linguistics content)
LING: 301, 302, 303, 304, 322, 331, 401, 412, 413, 415, 417, 425, 429, 433, 435, 446, 460, or 469

SSL Mi Libro Scholarship 2024-25
SSL Mi Libro Scholarship Academic Year 2024-25
Mi libro scholarship will support undergraduate students to purchase textbook materials that are used in the Spanish Second Language Program courses SPAN1110, SPAN1120 and SPAN2110 at UNM.
Eligibility:
- Be currently enrolled in Spanish 1110, 1120 or 2110 and be registered in another Spanish course the following semester.
For Fall 2024 applicants: Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 schedule required
For Spring 2025 applicants: Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 schedule required - Be a freshmen, sophomore or junior that will not be graduating in 2025.
- Have a minimum of B (83) in Spanish 1110, 1120 or 2110 in Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 taken from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UNM. (copy of email from instructor confirming grade. Email should include applicant’s and instructor’s full name and course section information)
Award Amount:
$75 for students enrolled in SPAN 1110, 1120 or 2110.
Deadline:
Fall 2024 deadline: December 1, 2024
Spring 2025 deadline: May 1, 2025
